Panama hats are not from Panama but from primarily Ecuador. The hats are made from panama straw (Latin name Carludovica palmata or local common name paja toquilla), and are hats made from this particular straw. Theodore Roosevelt wore a Panama Hat on the opening of the Panama Canal, and rumor has it, that is where the name came from! Panama hats are blocked in virtually any style. we do alot of the blocking and shaping ourselves, as western styles are not available in Ecuador. The quality of panama hats can vary significantly regarding grading and pricing. These hats are of wider weave, what would be considered a Grade 3/4. Importing hats form Equador has it own special Customs requirements and may take 8 weeks, but we do our best to keep these instock in S and M. Most Large hats will be special order, so if you are in a rush please e-mail me before buying!
